Tips for Better Hair and Scalp Health →

May 20, 2026

Even the most dedicated skincare practitioners can overlook the importance of our scalp’s health while prioritizing the benefits of hair products like shampoo, conditioner, and other hair care items. However, learning how to properly care for your scalp can significantly improve its health and, consequently, the health of your hair.

If you suspect that you’ve been neglecting this area of skincare, it’s never too late to brush up on healthy habits. Here are some helpful tips to give your scalp the care it deserves.

The Importance of Scalp Health

Scalp health is the cornerstone of hair quality, growth, and retention. It’s not just the skin beneath the hair; it’s a complex, living environment housing approximately 100,000 hair follicles.

A healthy scalp performs several vital functions, such as regulating hair growth cycles and controlling sebum production. Just like your skin, your scalp’s microbiome, a delicate ecosystem of bacteria and fungi, acts as the first line of defense against pathogens. Maintaining a balanced microbiome prevents inflammatory conditions and infections. Additionally, your scalp’s acid mantle, a natural barrier composed of sweat and sebum, locks in moisture while preventing harmful microbes from entering.

Finally, your scalp’s natural barrier prevents external bacteria and fungi from penetrating the scalp and migrating into the bloodstream or internal organs.

Tips for Better Care

To achieve better scalp health, prioritize proper cleansing, thoughtful product selection, and regular stimulation of blood circulation. In addition, concentrate on maintaining a balanced diet and protecting your hair and scalp from external stress. By treating your scalp like an extension of your facial skincare routine, you create an ideal environment for healthy hair growth.

Learn Your Hair Type: Just like knowing your skin type, understanding your hair type is vital to achieving optimum results. Whether your hair is straight, curly, fine, or textured, there are specific products and routines tailored to suit your hair type. Always be sure you’re using the right one for you.

Optimize Your Wash Routine: Some hair types don’t require daily washing. Instead, determine how often your hair gets dirty or oily and adjust your wash routine accordingly. For instance, if you have straight hair and an oily scalp, you might need to shampoo daily. On the other hand, if your hair is dry, textured, curly, or thick, shampoo only when necessary, at least once every 2 to 3 days. When washing your hair, focus on your scalp rather than the entire length of your hair. This approach helps cleanse and remove buildup, dead skin cells, and excess oil without excessively drying your hair.

When necessary, give your scalp and hair a double cleanse. Use a clarifying wash first to remove stubborn product buildup, followed by a more nourishing formula. Finally, always rinse with lukewarm water, as hot water dries out the skin barrier and triggers excess oil production.

Choose Ingredients Wisely: Avoid harsh ingredients like sulfates, which can cause scalp irritation, tightness, and flaking. Remember that your scalp needs exfoliation, just like your skin. Look for products with salicylic acid or glycolic acid to gently dissolve dead cells. To soothe your scalp, consider using targeted serums with actives like niacinamide to support the skin barrier or tea tree oil to combat dandruff-causing yeast.

Massage Your Scalp Daily: Use your fingertips or a silicone scrubber in gentle, circular motions to improve blood circulation. For an effective scalp massage, move the scalp skin over the skull bone instead of simply sliding your fingers or tools through your hair. This technique relieves deep muscle tension, breaks down restrictive tissue fibrosis, and effectively increases localized blood circulation to revitalize sluggish hair follicles. Massage your scalp in this way for five to ten minutes, once or twice daily.

Practice Gentle Physical Care: Before washing your hair, use a clean brush to gently loosen dead skin cells and product residue from your hair and scalp. Since wet hair is especially delicate, opt for a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush to detangle it. If you have thick, curly hair, the ideal time to comb is during your shower before rinsing out your conditioner. Always gently squeeze (never rub) excess water out of your hair with a clean, dry towel. Rubbing can cause frizziness, damage, and breakage. While it’s important to dry your roots promptly, avoid wrapping wet hair in a towel too tightly or for an extended period. Prolonged moisture can lead to fungal infections like dandruff. Finally, never sleep on wet hair.

Limit Tight Hairstyles: Whenever possible, steer clear of tight ponytails, braids, or buns. These styles create tension, restricting airflow and causing damage to hair follicles. Protective styles are particularly beneficial for curly, coily, and textured hair, helping to prevent damage and breakage from daily styling. However, if worn for extended periods, they can be quite harsh on your scalp. Opt for longer-term protective styles like braids, weaves, and twists for two to three weeks, ideally taking a week off before your next styling session.

Protect from Sun Exposure: Exposure to ultraviolet light can cause your scalp skin to burn, just like skin on other parts of your body. To enhance your protection, apply a dedicated spray-on scalp sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, or wear a scarf or hat during peak daylight hours.

Support from Within: To maintain a healthy scalp, ensure you drink plenty of water to help prevent dehydration. Incorporate foods rich in zinc, iron, biotin, and vitamin D into your diet to combat nutritional deficiencies that contribute to flaking and hair shedding. Additionally, include omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseed and fish oils in your diet to stimulate your sebaceous glands and lock in moisture.

Final Thoughts

A healthy scalp leads to healthy hair, so it’s important to give it the attention it needs. You can support a healthy scalp through everyday habits by using gentle products and being kind to your hair. Take steps to protect your scalp and hair from external stressors, and focus on providing extra support through proper hydration and balanced nutrition.
