Skincare's Buzziest Ingredients for 2026 →

January 10, 2026

If you’re passionate about achieving healthy, radiant skin, it’s crucial to understand the ingredients poised to dominate the coming years.

The future of beauty appears brighter than ever, with a new wave of groundbreaking ingredients set to take center stage in 2026. From advanced peptides to environmentally conscious botanicals, here are some of the biggest trends you’ll be hearing about this year.

Exosomes

Exosomes have been prominent in the beauty scene for some time, and the excitement surrounding their potential hasn’t faded.

Exosomes are tiny vesicles released by cells that transport proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. They play a critical role in skincare by promoting cell communication, reducing inflammation, and enhancing the production of collagen and elastin.

Already popular in Korea, exosomes are believed to offer numerous benefits, including anti-aging effects, wound healing, and skin regeneration. Beyond skincare, they may also promote hair restoration and provide pain relief, particularly for conditions like severe arthritis.

Exosomes show promise in skincare, but the current hype exceeds proven results due to a lack of standardization and insufficient studies. While professional applications may be more effective, the efficacy and safety of over-the-counter products remain unproven.

PDRN

PDRN, derived from salmon sperm (yes, you read that right), is thought to offer remarkable hydrating and collagen-boosting benefits. PDRN, a DNA-based compound, is renowned for its regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties. It is primarily extracted from the sperm cells of salmon, chosen for their exceptional biocompatibility with human cells. The structural similarity between salmon DNA and human DNA helps to ensure its safety and tolerance.

Salmon DNA is abundant in nucleotides, the fundamental building blocks of DNA. These molecules are crucial for cell repair and regeneration. When applied to the skin or administered through specialized treatments, PDRN can stimulate the skin’s natural healing process, making it a highly sought-after solution in both aesthetic and medical skincare.

PDRN is versatile and can benefit a wide range of skin conditions, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, and dull or uneven skin tone. PDRN can also assist in post-procedure recovery, helping the skin to heal after laser treatments or microneedling.

Although it shows promise, the efficacy of PDRN in skincare remains an open question. Some research suggests that it may be most effective when injected directly into the skin. However, because of its relatively large molecular size, PDRN may not be as effective when applied topically. Additionally, PDRN-based treatments and products should not be used by individuals who are pregnant or nursing, have active acne or skin infections, or suffer from severe seafood allergies. Individuals with autoimmune conditions should consult with their doctor before using PDRN.

Spicules

No, it’s not the name of a newly-discovered alien race. Spicule skincare is simply one of the latest trends to hit the beauty industry. Already popular in Korea, and inspired by the benefits of microneedling, spicules offer a less invasive, more natural approach to ingredient absorption.

Spicule skincare, often called “liquid microneedling,” uses microscopic, needle-like structures extracted from marine sponges to create tiny channels in the skin. When massaged into the skin, these microscopic structures penetrate the skin, much like a microneedling tool. This process is believed to enhance the absorption of active ingredients, stimulate collagen production, and improve skin texture and turnover.

Spicules are a compelling, evolving area of skincare, but questions remain about their best use. While spicule skincare products show promise for improving ingredient penetration and exfoliation, their effectiveness ultimately depends on product formulation and active ingredients. Overall, more research is needed to determine the long-term benefits and safety of spicule skincare.

Algae

While not the most glamorous of ingredients, algae offer a wide variety of skin benefits. Algae are packed with vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and polysaccharides that nourish the skin. Algae, including green, red, and brown varieties, each provide unique benefits:

Brown Algae (Kelp): Rich in polysaccharides, provides moisture.

Red Algae: Soothes skin, reduces inflammation.

Blue Algae (Spirulina): Antioxidant-rich, promotes firm, smooth skin.

Green Algae (Chlorella): Dense in chlorophyll, supports cell turnover.

In general, algae help to revitalize, hydrate, and protect the skin. Algae also provides powerful antioxidant protection, anti-inflammatory benefits, and can help boost collagen production for firmer skin. Algae-infused products are generally considered safe and beneficial for most skin types and can improve texture, fight breakouts, brighten dark spots, and strengthen the skin barrier.

Mushrooms

Mushroom extracts are a trending ingredient in skincare primarily due to their high antioxidant content, which helps protect the skin from cellular damage. They can also help reduce inflammation, minimize fine lines, and brighten the skin. For example, tremella mushroom (also known as snow mushroom) is notable for its excellent hydration abilities, similar to those of hyaluronic acid. As a natural humectant, it effectively locks in moisture, keeping the skin hydrated. Other mushroom varieties known for their skincare benefits include:

Reishi: Rich in antioxidants, boosts elasticity, supports collagen production, reduces fine lines, and calms inflammation.

Chaga: High in nutrients, fights free radicals, reduces oxidative stress, and increases circulation.

Cordyceps: Supports immunity, helps fight dark spots, boosts hydration, and can balance hormones for clearer skin.

Shiitake: Brightens complexion, promotes skin renewal, and increases elasticity.

Maitake: Improves skin firmness, improves elasticity, and reduces dullness by aiding moisturization.

Lion’s Mane: Soothes irritation, reduces redness, and fights signs of aging.

Malachite

You may know malachite best as a gemstone — its distinctive green hue makes it a popular choice in jewelry. But it also boasts impressive skincare benefits. Malachite extract is a potent, copper-rich mineral that acts as a powerful antioxidant to neutralize free radicals, protect against pollution, and calm inflammation. Known as a “detoxifying” agent, it stimulates collagen and elastin production to firm skin, improve elasticity, and promote a radiant, even complexion.

Malachite extract is generally suitable for most skin types and is particularly beneficial for those looking to combat pollution, aging, or congestion. It’s usually formulated as a liquid extract in serums, creams, and cleansers, and works especially well when combined with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.

While malachite is generally considered a safe and effective ingredient in skincare products, users are advised not to combine it with products containing vitamin C.
