When it comes to skincare, there’s nothing quite as luxurious as a professional facial. It’s the ultimate beauty boost, an experience that can be as rewarding for your spirit as it is for your skin.
If you’re new to professional facials, here are a few things to keep in mind before scheduling your appointment to ensure a highly effective and enjoyable experience.
Don’t Wear Makeup
Arrive at your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin. Thoroughly cleanse your skin to remove makeup, dirt, or impurities, ensuring that your facial treatment can penetrate deeply and deliver maximum skin benefits. Consider going makeup-free for at least 24 hours after your treatment to allow your skin time to breathe.
Don’t Exfoliate
Instead of using your favorite exfoliating skin product, simply wash your face before and after your facial treatment. Since many facials already exfoliate your skin, it’s important not to overdo it. After your facial, wait at least two days before exfoliating again.
Don’t Shave or Wax
Try not to wax or shave your face at least 24 to 48 hours before your facial. These hair removal methods can leave your skin vulnerable to irritation when certain facial treatments are applied.
Don’t Use Retinol
If you use retinol in your regular skincare routine, you should avoid using any retinol products for at least a few days before your treatment. Strong actives such as retinol can sensitize the skin, increasing the likelihood of irritation.
Avoid Sun Exposure
Skin that’s exposed to UV rays without protection can be sensitive and more prone to irritation during a facial treatment. Therefore, it’s advisable to avoid sun exposure for at least a week before your facial appointment. If you must be outdoors, make sure you wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. This rule applies to post-facial skincare, too.
