Skin Positivity: The Impact of Skincare on Mental Health →

September 10, 2025

While a consistent skincare routine is beneficial for maintaining healthy skin, it can also have a significant, positive impact on your mental health. Skincare is self-care, and taking the time to care for ourselves is essential to maintaining our overall health and well-being.

Our skin is our body’s largest organ. It serves as a protective barrier against harmful external factors such as pollution, UV rays, and stress. Protecting and caring for our skin helps to maintain that barrier, giving our bodies a distinct advantage in fending off would-be aggressors. In addition, healthy, vibrant skin is a confidence booster that can help us feel good about ourselves.

But the benefits of a good skincare routine aren’t only physical. The act of skincare itself has many rewards—here’s why.

Sense of Routine: Having a skincare routine gives a sense of structure and consistency in your daily life. Knowing you have a specific time to focus on yourself can bring a sense of calm and stability. It becomes a reliable part of your day, no matter what else is happening. Engaging in a regular skincare routine can be a soothing activity that allows us to take a break from our busy lives and focus on ourselves.

Promotes Relaxation: When we practice skincare, we give ourselves permission to slow down and enjoy self-care. The simple act of applying moisturizer or a face mask can feel like a spa treatment, offering a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Encourages Mindfulness: By focusing on the sensations, aromas, and textures of skincare products, we can stay more present and develop a sense of mindfulness. This can help reduce stress, encourage relaxation, and improve our overall mental clarity.

On the other hand, an overly complicated skincare routine can lead to feelings of stress and anxiety. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok often display filtered, airbrushed skin alongside elaborate skincare routines. These images and tips set unrealistic standards that make us feel insecure. In addition to filters, influencers frequently have access to professional treatments and special lighting that most people don’t. This constant exposure can make us feel like our natural skin is flawed or unhealthy.

In addition, viral skincare trends can cause confusion about what is truly effective. Misinformation and gimmicks—such as using unproven natural remedies or overloading on active ingredients—can lead to unnecessary damage to your skin barrier.

Here’s how to know if your skincare routine is stressing you out:

Constantly Switching Products: Results take time, and impatience can lead you to change products before giving them a chance to work. Remember, most skincare takes weeks to months to show results. Beyond that, wanting to try the latest product or trend going viral on social media can also lead to switching up your routine too quickly.

Research Overload: Spending hours dissecting every ingredient or following influencer-led trends without understanding their relevance to your skin can be detrimental to both your mental health and the health of your skin.

Excessive Spending: Shopping hauls may be fun to watch on social media, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that overconsumption is normal behavior. It’s not. This is especially true for skincare, as using too many products at once can cause a range of skin issues. Additionally, overspending on skincare can lead to feelings of guilt and stress.

To combat these effects, focus on a simple skincare routine. Stick to a few steps and prioritize quality, evidence-based products over quantity. A minimalist approach to skincare will save you time, money, and mental energy. And keep your expectations realistic. Healthy skin doesn’t have to be flawless. It’s normal for skin to have pores, texture, and even the occasional breakout. Always focus on consistency rather than perfection.

Finally, keep in mind that healthy skin isn’t solely determined by the products you apply to your face. Effective skincare also encompasses good sleep habits, a balanced diet, adequate hydration, and stress management.
