With so many influencers flooding social media, it can be difficult to find those who fit your vibe. Even more difficult is finding the ones you feel you can trust.
I’ve followed (and unfollowed) my fair share of influencers over the years. It’s interesting to look back and see how my priorities have changed. These days, my interests lean more toward “de-influencer” content, focusing on creators who are honest, self-aware, responsible, and willing to share a healthy dose of skepticism, even on topics they clearly love.
Here are a few I’ve been enjoying lately:
James Welsh
James Welsh is a former stylist and skincare enthusiast. His YouTube channel covers a wide range of topics, including skincare reviews, in-depth analyses of skincare brands, and honest, insightful commentary on the beauty and skincare industries.

Dr. Michelle Wong
Dr. Wong is a science educator and cosmetic chemist. Hailing from Sydney, Australia, with a PhD in chemistry, Michelle started her blog, Lab Muffin, out of frustration with the lack of easy-to-understand explanations of the science behind beauty products. Her content focuses on breaking down the complex technology and science behind skincare, in-depth product reviews, and debunking common beauty myths.

Lael Hansen
If loud, in-your-face beauty commentary is your jam, look no further than Lael Hansen. From calling out risky cosmetic procedures and ridiculous skincare trends to roasting the Kardashians on the regular, few things manage to escape Lael’s withering gaze. To quote the woman herself, “Buckle up, besties, and prepare for impact!”
