5 Biggest Skincare Myths Debunked →

June 30, 2025

Navigating the world of skincare can be intimidating, especially considering the vast amount of myths and misconceptions out there. This misinformation can often lead us down paths that aren’t always good for our skin health.

From a historical perspective, beauty and skincare have consistently provided fertile ground for bizarre customs and old wives’ tales. Today is no different, with social media influencers and the ever-expanding beauty industry bombarding consumers with an excess of new products and advice.

Yet, when it comes to skincare, not all that glitters is gold. To help save you from complexion chaos, let’s debunk some of skincare’s biggest myths.

“You Only Need Sunscreen When…” There seem to be countless excuses for skipping sunscreen. You only need sunscreen when it’s sunny. You only need sunscreen outdoors. You don’t need sunscreen in winter. Darker skin tones don’t need sunscreen. If your makeup contains SPF, you don’t need a separate sunscreen. None of these statements are true.

Sunscreen is an essential part of any healthy skincare routine, regardless of the weather, season, or skin tone. When aiming for healthy, great-looking skin, SPF is your best friend.

Oily Skin Doesn’t Need Moisturizer: All skin needs moisture, regardless of skin type. If your skin is oily or acne-prone, it may be tempting to let it dry out, but skipping moisturizer will only cause your skin to produce even more oil to compensate for the dryness. The key here is to find the right moisturizer for oily skin. Look for lightweight, gel-based, or non-comedogenic formulas that deliver the moisture your skin needs without being too heavy or greasy.

Pores Open and Close: Pores are tiny openings in the skin’s surface that are connected to sebaceous (oil) glands and hair follicles. It is physically impossible for pores to open, close, or change size because they lack muscles, regardless of whether you are steaming your face or taking an ice-cold bath. However, the appearance of pores can change due to factors like oil production, sun damage, and the natural aging process. And while you can never truly “close” or “shrink” pores, you can manage their appearance by keeping them clean.

Natural Ingredients Are Always Safer: We’ve discussed natural ingredients many times on Skintuition, and our stance remains the same: natural ingredients are not automatically healthier, better, safer, or more effective than their synthetic counterparts. In fact, “natural” ingredients can be just as questionable regarding safety and may cause irritation or allergic reactions.

Tanned Skin is Healthy: There is no such thing as a healthy tan. Any level of tanning harms your skin, and tanned skin indicates that it has been damaged. Whether you’re sunbathing in the backyard or using an indoor tanning bed, tanning damages the DNA of skin cells. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation from both natural sunlight and tanning beds causes DNA damage, increasing the risk of skin cancer, premature aging, and other skin health issues.
