Summer is here, and while a little outdoor fun can work wonders for your overall health, it can be a nightmare for your skin if you’re not prepared.
Our skin requires more care to stay healthy as the temperature rises and the sun shines brighter. In the midst of the summer heat and humidity, it’s critical to preserve and nourish your skin, whether you’re planning an exotic vacation or simply relaxing in the comfort of your backyard.
If you’re planning some extended fun in the sun, here’s what you need to get set before you jet set:
Sunscreen: It might sound obvious, but protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is essential. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that shields against both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of at least 30. If you’re planning to swim, make sure your sunscreen is waterproof, and remember to reapply it to all exposed areas (face and body) every two hours.
SPF Lip Balm: It might not be a frequently discussed topic, but your lips are especially vulnerable to sun damage. The skin on your lips is thinner than on other parts of your body and lacks oil glands, making it more prone to environmental exposure. In addition, your lips contain very little melanin, the pigment that shields skin from UV rays. Keep your lips hydrated and protected from sunburn, dryness, cracking, premature aging, and skin cancer by using a lip balm with SPF 30.
Vitamin C Serum: While not a replacement for sunscreen, vitamin C can help protect your skin from sun damage and reduce the severity of sunburns. A good vitamin C serum also provides antioxidant protection, helping to neutralize free radicals caused by sun exposure and pollution, which can damage skin cells and accelerate aging. Apply your vitamin C serum in the morning, along with sunscreen, to maximize its benefits.
Lightweight Moisturizer: Opt for a moisturizer that is hydrating but not too heavy. Products that contain hyaluronic acid or glycerin are great for hydration without feeling greasy. Look for lightweight, gel-based, non-comedogenic formulas that deliver the hydration your skin needs without any excess oils.
Face Mist: Although not strictly necessary, a refreshing facial mist can help keep your skin hydrated and cool throughout the day. Look for mists with ingredients like rose water, chamomile, or green tea for their soothing and hydrating effects.
After-Sun Care: Even if you’ve diligently applied sunscreen, skin that’s been exposed to sunlight over extended periods will need some extra care. Products like aloe vera gel can help soothe and hydrate sun-exposed skin. In addition, avoid products that tend to dry out or irritate skin, including benzoyl peroxide, alpha and beta hydroxy acids, and harsh face or body scrubs.
Wide-Brimmed Hat and Sunglasses: For added protection, don’t forget to pack a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Not only will you look incredibly stylish (this is your opportunity to channel your inner Grace Kelly), but these extras provide important protection for your face, neck, and eyes.
