I started using skin serums a little late in life. I’ve always been a skincare minimalist, so there was a long period when I could just wash my face, slap on some moisturizer/sunscreen, and head out the door. Things began changing in my late twenties, when I found that my skin required something extra. Whether I needed some extra hydration or brightening power, serums soon became a staple in my routine.
Serums are an effective, fuss-free product that can be easily added to your routine. They are quickly absorbed by the skin and are applied after cleansing and before moisturizing. Depending on your needs, serums can help with a variety of skincare concerns, including hydration, brightening, breakouts, and anti-aging.
Here are some of my favorites:
Burt’s Bees Facial Oil with Rosehip Seed Extract: This serum has been a lifesaver whenever my skin has been overly dry, reactive, or simply out of balance. Formulated with a soothing blend of concentrated rosehip, jojoba, and evening primrose oils, Burt’s Bees Facial Oil with Rosehip Seed Extract gives skin practically everything it needs to stay supple, hydrated, and glowing. Mild yet powerful, this comforting oil is rich in essential fatty acids and packed with vitamins and antioxidants to protect the skin from free radical damage. $20
KORRES Apothecary Wild Rose Spotless Serum: In the wilds of skincare, it can be difficult, if not impossible, to find products that truly deliver results. Despite the hefty price tag, this is one of the few products I’ve used that makes good on its promises. Fight dark spots and dullness with this luxurious serum infused with 15% Vitamin C. Did glowing skin just become an achievable reality? Plot twist! Note: If you want similar results while staying on budget, Burt’s Bees Facial Oil with Rosehip Seed Extract makes a great dupe! $72
The Blue Stuff by Face Foundrie: A pick-me-up in a bottle, this simple but effective serum gets its captivating color from malachite extract. Blue malachite, also known as azurite malachite, is a soft, blue-green mineral with a high concentration of copper. Copper strengthens the skin by helping to produce collagen and elastin. Along with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and Vitamin C, this lightweight serum is perfect for nourishing and protecting tired skin. $42
The Ordinary Mandelic Acid 10% + HA: A serum that exfoliates and hydrates my skin? Take my money! I’ve been using this serum for over five years, and I don’t think I’ve ever taken it out of rotation. Mandelic acid provides mild chemical exfoliation, while hyaluronic acid keeps skin plump and hydrated. $8
Tree To Tub Peptides & Niacinamide Serum: This botanical-based serum is designed especially for sensitive skin. This do-it-all formula moisturizes, brightens, and combats redness and environmental stress. Enhanced with neuropeptides and organic components like ginseng, green tea, and chamomile, this powerful serum provides skin with the overnight nourishment it needs without drying or irritation. $33
Esse Bakuchiol Serum: For those who are still a bit retinol-shy, Esse’s Bakuchiol Serum is a great jumping-off point. Bakuchiol is a natural, plant-based alternative to retinol, which provides similar results without the irritation retinol can cause. Lightweight and silky smooth, this formula boosts collagen synthesis to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and is suitable for all skin types. $43 - $77
