I’ve always been suspicious of skincare tools. From derma rollers to LED masks, there’s little out there that doesn’t get serious side-eye from me. Being a skincare minimalist, it would take quite an effort to motivate me to expand my routine. And when it comes to fussy skincare tools, well, that’s one area of skincare I’ve pledged to steer clear of (for the most part).
For the sake of transparency, I will say that I’ve enjoyed a few gua sha facials at my local spa. My hesitation to practice gua sha at home mostly stems from the fear that I will perform the practice incorrectly. And while there’s little damage to be suffered from a gua sha mishap, the same cannot be said for some other skincare devices. Overall, I prefer to leave the more advanced skincare procedures to the professionals.
So, are simple tools like jade rollers worth our time and money? How do they work, and what results can we expect? Here’s what I found out:
What Are Rollers and Gua Sha Tools?
Face rollers and gua sha tools are two types of facial massage tools with roots in traditional Chinese medicine. Face rollers, made from natural jade (or other stones), are typically designed with a handle attached to a smooth, rolling stone that glides lightly across the skin.
Gua sha tools, traditionally crafted from jade, rose quartz, and other stones, are flat facial tools used for short, pressured strokes on the skin.
In ancient China, jade held immense significance, symbolizing beauty, wealth, and power. During the Qing dynasty, jade rollers became an integral part of the beauty routines of Chinese elites, as jade was believed to possess unique healing and soothing properties.
What They Do
Face rollers and gua sha tools help boost blood flow, reduce inflammation, and support lymphatic drainage. Both tools can ease tension in facial muscles and encourage relaxation. In particular, gua sha tools offer a more vigorous massage and can alleviate pain and tightness in the neck and jaw. Some research indicates that facial massage may lower anxiety and improve your mood.
What They Don’t Do
If you’re hoping for long-term results from these tools, you might be disappointed. While they both provide soothing massages and promote relaxation, the benefits they provide are superficial. Face rollers and gua sha tools are effective for improving circulation and temporarily reducing puffiness in the skin. However, there’s limited evidence to support their ability to provide permanent anti-aging effects or major skin benefits.
Rollers are often marketed as being able to contour, lift, and sculpt facial muscles. However, they don’t apply enough pressure to stimulate muscle tone. Furthermore, many fans use them in conjunction with facial creams and serums, believing the roller can penetrate these products deeper into the skin for enhanced absorption. Unfortunately, these claims are also unsubstantiated.
Likewise, gua sha tools can apply pressure, but they cannot stimulate an increase in muscle tone or growth. In general, facial muscles have limited growth potential. Therefore, gua sha cannot build up facial muscles enough to lift sagging skin or sharpen facial contours.
As for fine lines and wrinkles, neither face rollers nor gua sha tools can penetrate the skin deep enough to have a significant effect. While both tools are believed to enhance collagen, wrinkle-fighting collagen production requires deeper dermal stimulation, which goes beyond the capabilities of these tools.
What Else?
Like other beauty tools that come into contact with the skin, rollers and gua sha tools can harbor bacteria. If not cleaned thoroughly after each use, these tools can transfer bacteria to the skin, potentially causing breakouts or irritation.
Furthermore, skincare tools like these can cause irritation, redness, or even micro-tears, especially when used too aggressively or on sensitive skin. Occasionally, with excessive pressure, facial rollers and gua sha tools can lead to minor bruising or bleeding. People with conditions such as rosacea, eczema, or acne should be cautious or avoid using them altogether.
Ultimately, face rollers and gua sha can be a nice addition to your routine if you enjoy the ritual of using them for a quick pick-me-up. While they can be beneficial, think of them not as a permanent fix for common concerns, but more as a special treat for your skin.
