5 Ways to Rebel Against Impossible Beauty Standards →

July 30, 2025

Finding the space we need to be ourselves can be a challenge.

From 10-step skincare routines to digital beauty filters, unrealistic beauty standards, often amplified by traditional and social media, can harm our self-image and lead to mental health challenges such as low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety.

However, as difficult as it may seem, it is possible to reject these standards and cultivate a healthier outlook. Here are five ways you can fight against unrealistic beauty standards.

Recognize and Challenge Beauty Standards

Understand that societal beauty standards are often impossible to meet and don’t truly reflect real life. Also, remember that beauty ideals are always shifting, which reveals something about society on a larger scale. Fight negative thoughts by questioning and changing the way you talk to yourself about your appearance. Ask yourself if you would hold the same standards for others. Practice non-judgment and commit to approaching yourself and others with kindness and an open mind. Although we can’t transform society overnight, we can make positive changes within ourselves.

Practice Self-Love and Acceptance

Self-acceptance involves acknowledging and embracing all aspects of yourself, including your flaws and imperfections. Learning to love and accept yourself can manifest in various ways, such as practicing mindfulness, embracing authenticity, expressing yourself freely and honestly, and letting go of the need to be someone you’re not. Practice self-compassion by treating yourself with kindness, openness, and understanding. Pay attention to your thoughts, especially noticing “should statements”—self-imposed rules about how things “should” be. Try to observe these thoughts as they come up without actively focusing on them.

Curate a Positive Online Environment

Few people would disagree that the Internet is both a blessing and a curse. While it may contain a wealth of knowledge and inspiration, misinformation and toxic content are persistent problems. Social media itself may not be the sole culprit, but our usage patterns can significantly impact our self-image. Therefore, be mindful of your social media usage and take steps to clean up your feed. Unfollow accounts and posts that promote unrealistic beauty standards and prioritize regular breaks to reduce exposure to potentially harmful content.

Set Healthy Boundaries

In addition to setting limits on social media, consider imposing healthy restrictions on other forms of media consumption, such as magazines and television. If that means postponing your weekly binge of Love Island or Keeping Up with the Kardashians, then so be it. Also, practice saying “no” to unrealistic expectations. Trends in beauty and skincare come and go at a rapid pace. It’s important to acknowledge that not all of them are going to be worthy of your attention. Keep a mental list of the new things you may want to try, and give a pass to those you know are not for you.

Talk It Out

Unlearning toxic beauty ideals is not easy, but it’s worth the effort to protect your long-term wellbeing. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed or exhausted when consciously challenging your thoughts and beliefs about your appearance and worth. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Talking to trusted friends or family may help reduce the frustration and anxiety you might be feeling. You may even want to consider getting involved in groups dedicated to fighting against toxic beauty culture. Connecting with activists and learning about how capitalism and patriarchy directly profit off our insecurities provides a healthy outlet and reminder of why fighting these standards is so important.

If you’re still struggling with self-image issues, consider contacting a mental health professional who can provide guidance and support.
